2. Language Requirements

Applicants who wish to study under the Liberal Studies Bachelor’s program at the University of Waterloo whose native language is not English must demonstrate English language proficiency by presenting an acceptable score on one of the approved tests.

2.1 Language Exemptions

The University of Waterloo may also accept applicants without taking English language proficiency exams, provided that they meet certain conditions. 

  • You have studied in Canada for four consecutive years before your application, and your native language is English.
  • You are a Canadian who speaks English and French, or French is your native language, and you have obtained a full-time education in Canada for four years or more.
  • You have completed full-time studies in a specific English language school in Canada or another country for four years or more, and English is not your native language.

Scholarships for Liberal Studies at University of Waterloo

1. International Student Entrance Scholarships

  • Qualifications: The scholarship is open for international students who are accepted to the first year of a full-time undergraduate degree program. The applicant must have obtained a minimum of 90% admission average.
  • Scholarship Amount: $10,000

2. President's Scholarships of Distinction

  • Qualifications: The applicant must have obtained an average of 95% and above for an early May admission. The scholarship is open to students who are accepted at Waterloo for full-time first-year degree studies and starting with post-secondary studies in September for the first time.
  • Scholarship Amount: $2,000 Entrance Scholarship, $1,500 International Experience Award, and/or, $1,500 Research Award

3. President's Scholarship

  • Qualifications: The applicant must have obtained an average of 90% to 94.9% for early May admission. Available to students admitted to full-time first-year degree studies at Waterloo and starting college in September for the first time.
